Remote Sketching on Paper (PDF) by Hermann Hofstetter

Sketching activity is usually enabled by pen and paper, an interface allowing quick execution of drawings and supporting the nature of the sketch itself. When looking at collaboration around sketches in terms of brainstorming sessions or collaborative design, the paper interface is however not always suitable since often remote parties are involved and synchronous communication is required. Nevertheless novel technologies for interactive paper, allow to bridge the paperdigital divide, enabling actions on paper to be transferred digitally. In this thesis an analysis of sketching activity in collaboration, highlighting the importance of paper as a natural user interface in this setting is presented. Based on users’ requirements it is shown how a prototype for collaborative sketching on paper has been implemented and how this is effective in supporting generation of ideas in collaboration.
